Indian military pilot and cosmonaut Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma (Ashok Chakra) (born Jan. 13, 1949, Patiala, Punjab state, India) is the first Indian citizen in space.
He flew aboard the Soviet rocket Soyuz T-11. Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked Mr. Sharma “how India looked from outer space?” he replied, “Sare Jahan Se Accha” (the best in the world).
The mission lasted nearly eight days then Rakesh Sharma landed in Kazakhstan on April 11.
In 1987 he joined the Indian company Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) as its chief test pilot. He left HAL in 2001 and became chairman of the board of Automated Workflow, a process-management company based in Bengaluru.

भारतीय सैन्य पायलट और अंतरिक्ष यात्री विंग कमांडर राकेश शर्मा (अशोक चक्र) (जन्म 13 जनवरी, 1949, पटियाला, पंजाब राज्य, भारत) अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाले पहले भारतीय नागरिक हैं।
उन्होंने सोवियत रॉकेट सोयुज टी-11 से उड़ान भरी। भारतीय प्रधान मंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने श्री शर्मा से पूछा “भारत बाहरी अंतरिक्ष से कैसा दिखता है?” उन्होंने उत्तर दिया, “सारे जहां से अच्छा” (दुनिया में सबसे अच्छा)।
मिशन लगभग आठ दिनों तक चला और फिर राकेश शर्मा 11 अप्रैल को कजाकिस्तान में उतरे।
1987 में वह भारतीय कंपनी हिंदुस्तान एयरोनॉटिक्स (HAL) में इसके मुख्य परीक्षण पायलट के रूप में शामिल हुए। उन्होंने 2001 में एचएएल छोड़ दिया और बेंगलुरू स्थित एक प्रक्रिया-प्रबंधन कंपनी, स्वचालित वर्कफ़्लो के बोर्ड के अध्यक्ष बने।
